Sigma Chi Philanthropy
As brothers of the most prestigious Fraternity in the world, we feel that it’s important to give back. With so many opportunities, we feel blessed to be where we are today and feel strongly about helping the community around us. As a national fraternity we have two national philanthropies. Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) was selected in 1992 to be the fraternity’s national philanthropy. Recently (in 2005), however, the Huntsman Cancer Institute was also selected as another national philanthropy recognized by chapters internationally. Both organizations place the best interest of their community first and provide help to those in need. Sigma Chi is proud to be associated with these fine organizations and looks forward to helping whenever possible.
Every year the Theta Beta Chapter of the Sigma Chi Fraternity here at the University of South Florida holds the largest philanthropy on campus, Derby Days. University students and companies from the bay area help us raise thousands of dollars for the Children’s Miracle Network and Huntsman Cancer Institute.
Childrens’ Miracle Network
The Children’s Miracle Network is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to saving and improving the lives of children. The organization provides services to children of all ages that either become injured, sick, or develop diseases. Whether it be heart defects, broken bones, asthma or cancer, Children’s Miracle Network has been there to help. Patients are never ignored due to financial difficulties and receive state-of-the art services to ensure their health and safety. Children’s Miracle Network was founded in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1983 and since, has opened 170 hospitals in order to serve the children of America
At the 1992 Balfour Leadership Training Workshop (BLTW), Children’s Miracle Network became Sigma Chi’s main philanthropic organization. Since this relationship was born in ’92, Sigma Chis internationally have raised $4.2 million dollars. There is a Children’s Miracle Network hospital within 200 miles of every single Sigma Chi chapter, making the impact Sigma Chis have on their communities profound. Money that is donated to Children’s Miracle Network goes directly the the hospital closest to the donating chapter. Thus far Children’s Miracle Network has raised over $2.5 billion dollars to help children and Sigma Chi is proud to be one of their sponsors.
Huntsman Cancer Institute
The Huntsman Cancer Institute is a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center specializing in cancer care and research. At the Huntsman Cancer Institute (located in Salt Lake City, Utah) understanding cancer from its beginning is the key to defeating the disease. Huntsman Cancer Institute is directly linked with the University of Utah and contains world renown physicians and scientists that excel in the study of human genetics. With this technique and approach the scientists of Huntsman Cancer Institute believe they can discover the real facts behind the epidemic disease and hopefully bring an end to cancer.
During the 150th year anniversary celebration of Sigma Chi, Huntsman Cancer Institute was declared one of the Fraternity’s preferred charitable organizations. The organization was created thanks to Brother Jon M. Huntsman Sr. (Pennsylvania 1959), who donated $225 million dollars toward the creation of the state-of-the art institute. Jon Huntsman, a cancer survivor himself, has made the dream possible and affected many grateful individuals. During the acceptance ceremony, at the 150th celebration, Sigma Chi donated $500,000 to the institute and looks forward to the growth in the years to come. Sigma Chi is excited to start a relationship with the Huntsman Cancer Institute to help defeat the second leading cause of death in the United States, and to help shape the world for a better future.
